Overworlds & Underworlds (2012)

The “Overworlds & Underworlds” festival came directly from the imagination of the world renowned artists The Quay Brothers who were the curators of the project commissioned by Leeds Canvas.

Leeds Canvas is the first collaboration between eight of the city’s key arts organisations Yorkshire Dance, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Phoenix Dance, Opera North, Northern Ballet, Leeds City Council, Leeds Met Gallery and Studio Theatre and Leeds Art Gallery.

“OverWorlds & UnderWorlds”  took place in Leeds, 18-20 May with dance, film, music, film and installation flooding the city. The project was Yorkshire’s contribution to Artists taking the lead, the UK Arts Councils’ flagship project for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Daniel was commissioned by  The Quay Brothers to create Northern Ballet’s contribution themed by the mythology of the River Styx.

This 40 minute piece for 10 dancers was performed by Northern Ballet over 3 days in a very atmospheric alcove of the Leeds Dark Arches where the Underworld part of the project was situated.

The music was specially composed by Gavin Bryars and was permeated with great effect throughout the Dark Arches with a haunting feel and looping between 3 to 5 hours at a time.
